Mahalaya Amavasya

The Most Significant New Moon of the Year

“It’s not about time; it’s about alignment.”

Understanding Amavasya

Amavasya, is the lunar phase of the new moon in Sanskrit. Indian calendars use 30 lunar phases, called tithi in India. In the Hindu lunar calendar, Amavasya holds profound spiritual significance.According to Hindu Astrology, when the Moon and the Sun align, their energies reach their zenith. Regardless of Western or Eastern divinations, aligning with the lunar cycle yields remarkable results for individuals.

Considering that our bodies are composed of 75% water, it’s worth noting that the Moon influences our emotions, feelings, intuitions, and our hidden subconscious self.

Mahalaya Amavasya

“Maha” signifies great, and “alaya” alludes to abode. This year, the Mahalaya Amavasya falls on October 14, 2023. While Amavasya occurs every 28 days, the Dark Moon of Pitru Paksha assumes special importance in Hindu Sanatan Dharma, referred to as “Mahalaya Amavasya.”

This day holds immense significance for several compelling reasons:

  1. Ancestral Abode

It marks the return of our ancestors to the realm of Pitru Loka after spending 14 days on Earth. Offering them food and water through the proper Shradh Ritual is believed to bestow the blessings we seek.

Ancestors’ blessings work miraculously in fostering personal growth, a principle firmly upheld in Hindu belief wherein they are our spiritual guides.

  1. Invoking Shakti on Earth

On this day, an invocation called ‘Mahalaya Paksha’ is performed, signifying the descent of the Goddess – Devi Durga. It is believed that Mahalaya is the time when Goddess Durga is invoked and invited to bless her devotees during upcoming festivities.

  1. Observing a Fast for Self-Purification

Many people fast on Amavasya to harness heightened energies by detoxifying the body and utilizing the energy for spiritual growth and purification. When we eat, a significant amount of our body’s energy is consumed in the digestion process. Fasting allows this energy to enhance our thoughts and detoxify the body, making it more receptive to spiritual experiences. If one is not able to fast completely, then abstaining from non veg food and eating Satvik is highly recommended.

  1. New Beginnings

With the Moon in alignment and heightened, it bestows intuitive insights, guiding us in choosing our next course of action. The darkness of this time encourages us to foster inner wisdom and connect with our divine selves. Journaling and planning for the upcoming month are highly recommended.

The overarching theme is about releasing what no longer serves us and initiating positive changes in our lives. By aligning with the universal energy of Amavasya and encouraging self-reflection, we can find direction. Utilizing the opportunity of Mahalaya Amavasya to make donations in the name of our ancestors and thanking them for the legacy they left behind enriches our lives with abundance and wisdom.
